PORT
JEFFERSON , NEW YORK
by Heather Buchanan
You cna still see the tall ships and listen
to the harbor bells ringing in this picturesque
waterfront village. History begins with the
Chamber of Commerce located in the Roe House
which started as a shoemaker's home, morphed
into a bar for train men, then ended up in
the port as a visitor's center. The deep water
harbor and protected cove make this the last
major port on Long Island as you're heading
east out of the Sound. Dting from the 1800s
when this was the shipbuilding center of Suffolk
County, Port Jefferson or Drowned Meadow as
it was one called due to the twice daily tides
which covered the marshes, has continued to
be home to maritime fleets and silors. The
Setauket Yacht Club hosts the annual Port Jeferson
Harbor Cup Regatta each June as well as sailing
races throughout the summer.
