MONTAUK
, NEW YORK
by
Heather Buchanan
Journeying to the end of the earth is well
worth it when you stand on an ocean bluff on
the easternmost tip of Long Island, gazing
at the rocks and beaches below and the vastness
of the sea beyond. George Washington knew this
was a postcard setting even before postcards
existed, commissioning the Montauk Point Lighthouse
in 1790. The fourth oldest working lighthouse
in America, it is open for public tours, and
offers a breathtaking picnic spot. Montauk's
rich history includes a varied mix from the
Indians to Teddy Roosevelt, from the Rough
Riders to Nazis in WWII to Andy Warhol all
of which can be viewed at the Second House
Museum.
