NEW
YORK HARBOR ,
NEW JERSEY
by
John Galluzzo
It's called “sense of place.” It's when we
look at a locale--a park, a street corner,
a house--and think about how it has meant different
things to different people over time.
Approaching New York Harbor, you can't help
but notice Ellis Island. Once you do, apply
the notions of sense of place. What did it
mean to immigrants a hundred years ago? The
sadness of leaving a homeland? The confusion
of arriving in a new country?
And what does Ellis Island mean to you today?
Or the city skyline, without the twin World Trade
Center towers?
