Needless to say, St. Michaels was a far different
place when Frederick Douglas, the great African-American
abolitionist orator passed through it. At that
time, he was a slave, bound to servitude. But
he was one of the lucky few that escaped those
bonds, and fled from the Eastern Shore.
Escape from the Eastern Shore? It
seems impossible today that those words could
be used in the same sentence.
