OXFORD,
MARYLAND
by
John Galluzzo
The American Revolution officially ended
on October 19, 1782, with the formal surrender
of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, after
years of heartbreak, death and suffering. The
British General offered his sword as a symbol
of that surrender to General George Washington,
who stepped aside and allowed his subordinate,
General Benjamin Lincoln, accept the gesture.
Washington then turned to one man to deliver
the news to the Continental Congress that the
war had ended, his aide-de-camp, Oxford' native,
Tench Tilghman.
