NEW
BEDFORD, FAIRHAVEN & PADANARAM, MASSACHUSETTS
by John Galluzzo
When the surfmen of the old Life-Saving Service - predecessor
to today's Coast Guard - sat in their station's
watchtowers, they accepted the task of counting
the number of ships that passed into and out
of harbors. Many of them, uneducated as they
were, instead of keeping written lists used
pegboards with silhouettes showing barks, brigs,
brigantines and more, lining up pins to count
how many vessels passed through their areas
of responsibility.
Daily reports from the stations along the
Massachusetts coast reflect what must have
been a sea of masts carrying goods in and out
of the busiest ports, hundreds of two-and three-masted
schooners leading the way. But alas, those
romantic sailing days are gone.
Not so fast, though. Have you been to New Bedford?
